Extraordinary Heat in Southeast Asia: Brunei and Malaysia Near June Temperature Records
Southeast Asia is currently experiencing an exceptional heatwave, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented highs across the region. On this day, Brunei Airport recorded a scorching 36.1°C, coming just 0.1°C shy of the all-time June record for the area. Meanwhile, neighboring Malaysia reported 35.9°C in Miri, marking one of the hottest June days on record.
What makes this event even more remarkable is the appearance of temperatures exceeding 37°C in inland stations of Brunei — a historic first for the Sultanate in June.
This extreme heat poses challenges for public health, agriculture, and infrastructure in the region, underscoring the importance of monitoring and preparing for the impacts of ongoing climate change. As Southeast Asia faces these soaring temperatures, communities are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, and take necessary precautions to mitigate heat-related risks.
The 2025 early summer heat is shaping up to be one of the most intense in Southeast Asian history, with records likely to continue falling in the days and weeks ahead.
