Extraordinary Heat Wave Sweeps Turkey: Record-Breaking Temperatures and Historic June Nights

Turkey is currently enduring an extraordinary Mediterranean heat wave that has shattered temperature records across the country, marking one of the most intense heat events in recent history. The heatwave is characterized by soaring daytime temperatures and unprecedentedly high nighttime lows, affecting both lowlands and high-altitude regions alike.

The town of Calyanpinar recorded a staggering 44.4°C, while elevated locations such as those at 700 meters above sea level saw temperatures around 42°C, and even at 1000 meters, readings reached a blistering 40°C. This persistence of extreme heat at altitude underscores the severity of the event.

What makes this heat wave especially remarkable is the exceptional nighttime minimum temperatures, with highs during the night reaching up to 32°C in the Turkish Highlands. Such warm nights severely limit cooling periods, exacerbating heat stress on populations, agriculture, and ecosystems.

Several locations have experienced historic records for June nights, including:

  • Nusaybin with a minimum of 31.8°C
  • Silopi with a minimum of 29.7°C

Hundreds of stations throughout Turkey have smashed temperature records by extreme margins, reflecting the intensity and persistence of this heatwave. Despite the widespread heat in the Mediterranean region, Italy remains an exception, showing no record-breaking temperatures during this period.

Meteorologists warn that the worst is yet to come, with further intense heat expected to continue and possibly intensify over the coming days.

This extraordinary event highlights the growing impact of extreme heatwaves in the Mediterranean basin, driven by broader climatic changes, and the urgent need for preparedness to mitigate their effects on health, infrastructure, and the environment.
