The situation in Germany is however much more dramatic, such appeared before 24 hours. The death toll has risen to 120 and the count of missing increased astronomically into 1600 after several river basins were affected.
Floods in western Germany, and in lesser magnitude in other parts of the country and neighboring countries are the worst in the region in living memory.
In Reifferscheid, an incredible 207 mm (8.1 inches) of rain fell in only 9 hours on Wednesday afternoon and evening, 14. July 2021 and 3-digit precipitation amounts only in a short time appeared across all western Germany.
Cologne reported record rainfall 154 mm / 24 hours from 14. to 15. July 2021.
Until Thursday, 15. July 2021, everything in the region was flooded, floodwater was high up to roofs of buildings, cars were swept away in a stream of a few meters high floodwater, some houses collapsed.
The worst situation was in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, where the most of victims and missing are reported.
Belgium already reports 23 dead (Liege region). The third-largest urban area in Belgium was urged to evacuate. The Charleroi–Namur–Liege line, and all railway lines in Belgium southwest of that line, was closed. A bad situation was reported from the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland or Czechia, too. Italy reports 1 dead from the event.
The quantity of rain in some areas of Germany were the highest for over 100 years, DWD already informed.
The governor of the Rhineland-Palatinate state told the regional parliament: “We have never seen such a disaster. It’s really devastating.” Angela Merkel was “shocked by the catastrophe”.
Deutsche Bahn reported that over 600 kilometres (370 mi) of the track was affected in North-Rhine Westphalia. The Cologne–Wuppertal–Hagen–Dortmund and Cologne–Bonn Hauptbahnof–Koblenz lines were closed. The Cologne–Bonn Beuel–Koblenz line was cancelled for trains.
The focus on Friday is across parts of the Alps, southern Germany, Italy and across into the Balkans and Poland.
Severe storms are expected mainly above continental Europe and northern Balkan until early August 2021.
