Very cold temperatures 2 weeks before Winter 2025 hit continental Antarctica.

The coldest was according to available sources in Concordia, -77,3°C.

Vostok station reported -76,6°C and Dome C -75,8°C.

From South Pole station, -70,7°C was measured.

Its the lowest temperatures in the continent in 2025, so far.

In Antarctica, a mostly cooling trend since the year 2000 is observed.

While in May 2025, so far (1.-16.5.2025), mostly low geopotential / air pressure is reported from the Arctic, in Antarctica is situation opposite, with mainly high geopotential / air pressure anomalies.

New study:

W. Antarctica cooled -1.8°C (-0.93°C/decade) from 1999-2018. Most of the continent also cooled >1°C.

Of 28 CMIP6 models, none captured this cooling.
