Our forecasts of heatwaves from the last days are confirming, and large parts of the continent will be hit by unseasonably severe heatwaves already in the first half of June 2025 (!).
Only a few days before, on 24. May 2025, in Spain were measured frosts below 1000 MASL elevations – Nestares reported -0,3°C.
From other countries, mornings 24.-25. May were extremely cold in Messstetten, Germany, -2,2°C, Pec pod Snezkou, Czechia, -2,0°C, Elseborn, Belgium, -1,8°C, Reims-Prunay, France, -0,9°C, Puchberg, Austria, -0,9°C, Telgart, Slovakia, -0,8°C or Pila, Poland, -0,5°C.
Meanwhile, in Greece was reported historically hot night, with unbelievable temperature of +37,4°C at the morning (5AM) (!!!). Lefkoniko, Cyprus, reported on 25. May +39,4°C. Heraklion, Crete, reported Tmin of +26,6°C in May. In other parts of Crete, Tmins reached up to +30,4°C. Jalo in Lybia reported Tmin +32,2°C, the highest May ever, Bodrum in Turkey +26,9°C. Record high Tmins were reported from Turkey: +26,4°C in Sanliurfa, +26,0°C in Adiyaman, +25.4°C in Mardin /1000 MASL), +23,6°C in Hatay or +23,4°C in Osmaniye.
Meanwhile, in Bulgaria, 10 cm hailstorms and in Poland and Germany, tornadoes, appeared.
From maximum national temperatures, +47,4°C was measured in Algeria, +46,5°C Libya, +40,4°C in Turkey and +39,6°C in Greece.
Extreme heatwaves in the last days hit Spain, Portugal and European Russia.
Seville, Spain, reported on 29. May 2025 Tmax of +40,1°C, which is only 0,9°C below all-time May record. Amaraleja in Portugal reported +39,5°C – and El Granado in Spain, +39,1°C, both monthly records. In Perpignan, France, was measured +33,9°C, too a record, and will be worse.
However, until 31. May will be even hotter and in southern Spain and Portugal, abnormal +42°C is predicted, which will be the newest national May records in all-time history!
Just this extreme air masses are forecast to spread into Europe – especially France, Germany, East-Central Europe, Italy and Balkan, where it should be the strongest early heatwave ever.
According to the latest predictions of GFS model, +42°C temperatures will be repeating in Spain and Portugal during the first half of June.
In France, temperature should exceed a threshold +40°C.
Italy should see in Sicily anomalous foehn effect with +44/+45°C and hot will be above peninsula, too, up to +42°C.
German meteorologists have already warned before a possibility of abnormal early-summer temperatures up to +39°C (!!!).
Similar were the last projections for East-Central Europe, especially Austria, Slovakia and Hungary (GFS +37°C on the map, it means up to +39°C locally).
Balkan and Greece should be baked by extreme heat very long, with maximum temperatures up to +40/+42°C.
Some runs of GFS returned T850 hPa temperatures above SE England up to +23°C (a risk of +38°C?), but the last forecasts have not confirmed this scenario, so far.
Meanwhile in European Russia, behind the Polar Circle, maximum temperatures are reaching above +30°C and minimum temperatures above +20°C (tropical days and tropical nights). E.g. Simanovsk reported Tmin of +21,5°C, Blagovescetnsk +21,1°C or Bratoljubovka +20,0°C. Vesljana reported Tmin of +19,4°C, Cherdyn +18,8°C, Jarensk +17,4°C or Sykytvka Vasljana +17,1°C.
In Asian Siberia is even hotter, up to +37,1°C (will be mentioned in the article for Asia).
According to ECMWF estimates for 2.-9. June 2025, an extreme heatwave should hit mainly Portugal, Spain, Italy, southern France, the Alpine region, the Carpathians, and the Balkans, and will persist the longest in Italy and the Balkans.
After an anomalous early-summer heatwave should arrive powerful cold frontal line, with a large temperature gradient, flash floods, gusty winds or even tornadoes.
It appears, that Summer 2025 will bring us a lot of surprises and after a very cold May 2025 in many regions in Europe, a temperature shock should begin.
