Unusually Cold Temperatures Hit Australia in June: Near Record Lows in Tasmania, Canberra, and Brisbane
June 2025 has brought exceptionally cold temperatures to parts of Australia, with some locations approaching historic record lows for the month.
In Liawenee, Tasmania, temperatures plunged to -8.0°C, just 3.2°C above the all-time June record low. This intense cold snap is notable for the region, known for its chilly winters but rarely seeing such low temperatures this early in the season.
Meanwhile, the nation’s capital, Canberra, experienced a frigid -5.5°C, only 3°C above its all-time June record low. Residents faced a stark reminder of winter’s grip, with temperatures well below average for early June.
Further north in Brisbane, an uncommon cold morning was recorded with a low of +3.4°C. This marks the coldest June morning in 23 years, breaking the previous June record low of +5.0°C. Such a chill is rare for Brisbane’s typically mild winter climate, highlighting the unusual nature of this cold front.
These unusually low temperatures across various Australian regions signal a significant cold wave impacting the country, challenging seasonal norms. Residents are advised to take precautions during this period of extreme cold, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly and young children.
As the season progresses, meteorologists will continue monitoring these temperature trends and their impacts on daily life and agriculture.
