Iran is currently facing one of its most brutal heatwaves in history, as temperatures continue to soar well above 49°C in many regions. On the most recent scorching day, 13 meteorological stations across the country recorded maximum temperatures exceeding 49°C, and one even breached the 50°C barrier, reaching a blistering 50.3°C.
This extreme heat is expected to intensify further over the next two days, raising alarms for public health, infrastructure, and energy systems. The Iranian Meteorological Organization has warned of continued dangerously high temperatures, especially in southern and central provinces, where heat indices could climb even higher.
Despite the challenging conditions, most weather stations remain operational, providing critical data and forecasts. This resilience is crucial for tracking the heatwave’s development and issuing timely warnings.
The energy situation, however, reflects the pressure the country is under. Currently, approximately 40% of Iran is facing issues with electricity supply, worsening by overloaded power grids, air conditioning demand, and possible damage from the heat, too. The remaining 60% of the country still retains uninterrupted access to electricity.
Iran is no stranger to high summer temperatures, but the current intensity and duration are unprecedented for June. These record-setting conditions are part of a broader trend of escalating extreme weather events across Asia and the Middle East, consistent with climate change projections.
Authorities are urging residents to conserve energy, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay hydrated, especially during the peak heat hours of the day. Hospitals and emergency services are on high alert for heatstroke and dehydration cases.
As the mercury continues to rise, all eyes will be on how Iran and its neighbors manage the intensifying heat crisis, which is quickly becoming one of the defining environmental challenges of our era.
