Since March 2023, Indonesia has been experiencing a persistent and relentless heatwave, breaking daily temperature records with alarming regularity. The country’s climate is under unprecedented stress as extreme heat becomes the new norm.
On Sunday alone, new June highest temperature records were set in multiple locations, including:
- 36.3°C in Bengkulu
- 35.6°C in Palangkaraya
These soaring temperatures highlight a worrying trend of sustained heat that shows no signs of easing. Experts warn that more record-breaking heat days are expected not only throughout June but also in the coming months.
This continuous pattern of intense heat poses significant challenges for public health, agriculture, water resources, and infrastructure across Indonesia. The ongoing heat records serve as a stark indicator of the growing impacts of climate change in Southeast Asia, emphasizing the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation efforts.
