
A devastating EF-1 tornado struck the hamlet of Clark Mills in Oneida County, New York, in the early hours of Sunday, June 22, 2025, claiming the lives of three residents and causing significant damage to homes and historic structures.
🌪️ Tornado Details
The tornado touched down between 3:58 a.m. and 4:03 a.m., with wind speeds reaching up to 105 mph. It carved a path approximately 2.5 miles long and 300 yards wide through Clark Mills and the surrounding areas. The storm’s intensity led to the destruction of a historic grist mill along Oriskany Creek.
🧑👩👧👦 Victims Identified
Among the fatalities were 6-year-old twin sisters, Emily and Kenni Bisson, and 50-year-old Shelly Johnson. The twins were found in the wreckage of their home on Hoyland Avenue, while Johnson was discovered in a severely damaged home on Millstream Court.
🌧️ Flash Flood Emergency
Concurrently, severe thunderstorms dumped between 3 and 5 inches of rain across central New York, leading to a rare Flash Flood Emergency in Chenango County. The heavy rainfall resulted in flooded creeks and roadways, with homes taking on water in areas such as Norwich, Sherburne, and New Berlin.
🚨 Emergency Response
Over 30,000 residents were left without power as utility crews worked to restore services. Emergency response teams were actively engaged in recovery efforts, urging the public to stay away from downed power lines and flooded areas.
🏛️ Historic Grist Mill Destroyed
The tornado’s path included the destruction of a historic grist mill along Oriskany Creek. The mill, a significant local landmark, was completely destroyed, marking a loss to the community’s heritage.
