On June 28, 2025, a series of powerful tornadoes struck South Dakota and Minnesota, causing widespread devastation. The Kadoka Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) reported significant damage to multiple structures near Kadoka, South Dakota, with several homes destroyed. The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety (OST DPS) confirmed the tornado touched down south of Kadoka, destroying multiple homes in the area. The tornado’s path reportedly started from the Whiteriver Bridge and headed southeast approximately 5 to 6 km (3 to 4 miles).
The storms left over 50,000 customers without power as they ripped through the region. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) reported at least 15 tornadoes across Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota, with more likely to have touched down and yet to be confirmed. While the SPC only received 15 tornado reports, more tornadoes are likely to have touched down and are yet to be confirmed.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from visiting the affected areas to allow first responders and families to clean up and assist those impacted by the storm. As of now, there have been reports of minor injuries, but no fatalities have been confirmed.
