While Europe remains an anomalously cold region and Central Asia is flooded by air with Saharan and Middle-Eastern origin, Greenland enjoys historic warm weather, and the Great Lakes region and Plains in the US and Canada again experience record-breaking cold (while southern USA, Mexico, and Cuba are extremely hot).
In Greenland, almost the hottest night in all-time history was in the last hours measured, with Tmin of +14,9°C in Nararsuaq.
“Hot” air was flowing above Greenland from southern and southeastern regions, where in Iceland, a new May record of +26,6°C was in the last week measured.
In Narsarsuaq, southern Greenland, the daily temperature on 20. May 2025, the same day of the historic minimum above, reached near sunny weather +20,1°C, therefore, in calm weather on sun, real-feel temperatures should be really hot, above +25°C, maybe +27°C afternoon.
In Scoresbysund above 70°N, +14,3°C was measured – never before in May and in Daneborg above 74°N, +11,9°C, same the new May record.
Meanwhile in Canada, after the first serious heatwave with +37,9°C in Emerson and +37,0°C in Winnipeg, snowing appeared at the same stations, and a cooldown stronger than 30°C during only a few days broke a winter after supertropical days.
Cold anomaly is gradually shifting above the Great Lakes region, Canadian and US Plains and Northeast more southward, above central-Eastern US and even the Gulf Coast in the following days, with anomalously cold weather.
E.g., in Grand Rapids (51°F) and Muskegon (50°F), the coldest highs for May 21 over the past 100+ years appeared – colder than the 51° on this day in 1907 & 1924.
In Rochester was even colder, only 45°F (+7,2°C), with a new temperature record, breaking the old one from 1892. So cold wasn´t here since 8. April 2025, which means around 6 weeks.
In Minnesota, the temperature at 17:00 locally reached only +39°F (+3,9°C) only a few days before summer (!).
Meanwhile, in Southern and SE US, minimum temperatures were reaching up to 82°F (+27,8°C) and maximum temperatures up to 109°F (+42,8°C), but in the next days, severe cooldown will come. Florida and Georgia reported the hottest May nights in history, regionally (Panama City, Florida, 81°F and Camilla, Georgia, 77°F).
A list of the next weather records for the USA from the last 48 hours you will find at the end of Tweets in this article.
Hot air already has shifted above Cuba – Havana reported the hottest May day in all-time history with Tmax of +38,0°C.
In Mexico is even hotter, +46°C in 3 states, with extreme real-feel temperatures in Yucatan thanks to high temperatures and humidity both.
