In North America, things are currently happening mainly in the northeastern and north central US and the Gulf Coast, as in the Caribbean and Mexico.
Extremely cold late-season weather hit the Northeast, the Great Lakes region, Plains, and cold air is gradually shifting to the South, above the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and the Southeast.
Extremely cold 22. May was measured in Central Park, New York, with Tmax only of 51°F / +10,6°C, which was the coldest 22. May in 131 years.
Many similar temperature records fell across large areas of the northern half of the eastern and central part of the US, and in SE Canada.
Hot air was pushed above the Gulf Coast, the Caribbean and Mexico, with e.g. the hottest May night ever in Tampa, Florida (80°F / +26,6°C).
Heatwaves are continuing in Mexico and the Caribbean and the Bahamas reported the hottest night in May in history, too, with Tmin of +27,2°C in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Record heat is predicted for the next days, too.
Meanwhile, in Texas, extreme storms with tennis-ball size hail appeared in the last hours. Severe storms, floods, hail, and tornadoes are expected in central and southern parts over the weekend.
Hurricane season is starting already in a few days and names of hurricanes are already good known (see in More reading).
