Hot Sahara, colder Sahel, warmer equatorial regions, but very cold South Africa, is a result of composites from ESRL for Africa these days.
A surprising cold anomaly in South Africa should be caused by a very dry air above the region, with maximum temperatures up to +40°C, only a few days before the winter /https://mkweather.com/heatwaves-above-sahara-and-sahel-algeria-472c-chad-470c-and-south-africa-399c-10c-hotter-than-summer-average-only-a-few-days-before-winter-gabon-353c//, but with very cold nights, too (an anticyclonic weather is colder in the Mediterranean in the winter half, too, thanks to NAO+, notice a strong anticyclonic geopotential anomaly above SAR).
Hot summer is already here above Sahara, with a new May record for South Valley, Egypt, where +47,1°C was measured.
Kufra in Libya reported a hot +45,7°C.
Chad and Sudan reported +47,0°C.
Severe floods hit in the last hours Lagos, Nigeria and Accra, Ghana, with a havoc in the streets.
