The first serious heatwave in Europe is coming: Spain, Italy, France +40°C, Turkey +44°C, Balkan +37°C, Continental, Eastern Europe, and Benelux +35°C, Scandinavia, the British Islands and Baltic region +30°C: All after historic cold in Altnaharra, the UK, with the latest -5°C in history (-5,1°C), and Prague, Czechia, with possibly latest 0°C (+0,1°C)

Already in the last article we have forecast severe frosts in continental Europe and the British Islands 0/-5°C on Friday´s and Saturday´s, 23.-24. May 2025, mornings.
Historically low late-May temperatures really have come, with the most significant temperature records in Altnaharra, the UK and Prague, Czechia.
In Altnaharra, the UK, minimum temperature on 23. May 2025 dropped to -5,1°C, which is the latest -5°C in season in all-time history (!). This value is 2°Cbelow the all-time June record for the station.
A very similar scenario was repeated in Prague, Czechia, with Tmin of +0,1°C in Prague, Ruzyne, which should be the latest 0°C in the city in history, according to our estimates from the climatic table for Prague, Klementinum.
From other stations – Tulloch Bridge, the UK, reported -2,7°C, Aviemore, the UK, -2,1°C, Karlovy Vary, Czechia -2,1°C, Isenvad, Denmark, -1,9°C, Liberec, Czechia, -1,7°C, Elseborn, Belgium, -1,6°C, Pec pod Snežkou, Czechia, -1,5°C, Bamberg, Germany, -1,1°C, Skrydstrup, Denmark, -1,0°C, Doksany, Czechia, -0,6°C, Nuernberg, Germany, -0,3°C, Nestares, Spain, -0,2°C, Mt Rigi, Belgium 0,0°C.
Meanwhile, in Romania appeared severe storms with up to 6 cm hail. Hailstorms, floods and tornadoes were bothering parts of Italy, too.
Above 30 mm rainfall were reported from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Spain, Latvia, Belarus, Sweden and Iceland, too.
Weather models are confirming the first European heatwave in Summer 2025 already in the first days of June 2025.
Regional maximum temperatures should reach above +40°C in Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy, +44°C in SE Turkey, +37°C above Balkan, +35°C in continental Europe and Benelux, such as in Eastern Europe and +30°C in the British Islands, Baltic region and Scandinavia.
Heatwaves should increase hospitalizations from heat; therefore, we recommend not forgetting about your drinking regime, such as avoiding spending long periods in the Sun during midday and afternoon.
It appears, that floods should occur in the Alps and on the front line from Greece to Estonia in the following period.
According to the newest ECMWF prognosis for the following 6 weeks, heatwaves from the West and East should join gradually during the month above central parts of the continent, with one megaheatwave in late June and early July 2025. The situation will stay in Mkweather watch and we will bring fresh information about changes in forecasts in the next week.
