This morning, São Joaquim in Santa Catarina recorded a frigid −6 °C (21 °F) as a strong polar air mass swept into southern Brazil. The intense cold left fountains frozen and fields coated in frost, in one of the coldest mornings of 2025.

The temperature was just 1.2 °C shy of the all-time June record for the town, underlining the strength of this cold outbreak in Brazil’s mountainous south. São Joaquim, one of the country’s coldest cities, frequently sees sub-zero winter temperatures but such deep freezes remain rare.

The coffee market reacted quickly on Monday, with prices spiking on frost fears, but fell heavily on Tuesday as the threat of significant crop damage appeared minimal. Most plantations were likely spared due to localized conditions and the brief duration of the extreme cold.
