Severe flooding has struck Huaiji County in Guangdong Province, China, following days of torrential rain exacerbated by Tropical Storm Wutip and subsequent monsoon conditions. As of June 18, 2025, approximately 300,000 residents have been affected, with 70,000 people relocated to safer areas due to rising floodwaters and infrastructure damage.
🌊 Scale of the Disaster
The Suijiang River overflowed, submerging roads and transforming streets into canals. Aerial footage revealed high-rise buildings and vehicles partially submerged, with floodwaters reaching halfway up the first floors of buildings. Over 50% of the county’s roads were submerged, leading to widespread power and internet outages.
🚨 Emergency Response
Rescue operations have mobilized over 10,000 personnel and 500 units of emergency equipment. Efforts include evacuating seriously ill patients from hospitals and delivering essential supplies, such as milk powder and water, to vulnerable groups including newborns, children, and the elderly sheltering in schools.
💡 Infrastructure and Relief Efforts
The National Development and Reform Commission has allocated 60 million yuan (approximately $8.36 million USD) from China’s central budget to support flood relief efforts in Guangdong Province. The funds will be directed toward restoring infrastructure and public services in the affected regions.
