Historic Heatwaves in Sichuan, China

Severe Heat Wave Strikes Western China: Multiple Records Broken Across Sichuan and Neighboring Provinces

Western China experienced a powerful heat wave today, causing temperatures to soar and shatter historical records throughout the region. According to meteorological reports, 53 weather stations across Sichuan and several other provinces recorded their highest June temperatures ever, underscoring the intensity of this extreme heat event.

So far, 33 stations in China have broken June records, with most of these stations concentrated in Sichuan province. Among them, Tongnan broke its June record for two consecutive days, reaching 39.3°C, while Chengdu also set a new record with 36.2°C.

Notably, the cities of Chengdu and Tongnan broke their June temperature records for the third consecutive day, a rare and alarming streak that highlights the persistence of the heatwave. These sustained high temperatures are putting significant stress on local infrastructure, agriculture, and public health.

In total, four provinces in Western China recorded temperatures exceeding 40°C, a threshold considered exceptionally hot for these areas. The combination of rising temperatures and prolonged heat spells is contributing to concerns over water shortages, crop damage, and increased risk of heat-related illnesses.

Meteorologists warn that this heat wave may continue in the coming days, urging residents and authorities to take precautions and prepare for ongoing extreme weather conditions.

This event is part of a broader pattern of rising temperatures and increasing frequency of heatwaves across Asia, a clear indicator of the growing impacts of global climate change.
