On June 27, 2025, the Shanghai Xujiahui weather station recorded a scorching 38.5°C, officially breaking its highest June temperature on record. This marks a historic milestone for one of China’s most important urban weather stations, located in the heart of the city.
But Shanghai wasn’t alone—eight other meteorological stations across eastern China also broke or surpassed their all-time June temperature records on the same day. This coordinated spike highlights a widespread and intense regional heatwave affecting coastal and inland provinces alike.
Meteorologists warn that such early and extreme heat is becoming increasingly frequent, and urban centers like Shanghai—already vulnerable due to heat island effects—are especially at risk. With July and August still ahead, the situation raises concerns about public health, energy demand, and long-term climate patterns in East Asia.
