More than 5,000 tourists, hotel workers, and residents have been evacuated from the Ierapetra area along Crete’s southern coast as devastating wildfires rage across parts of Crete, Greece, and western Turkey. Authorities and hotel association officials have coordinated the emergency response to safeguard lives amid a rapidly worsening fire season.
These wildfires have caused sea rescues, significant property loss, and created deadly conditions across the affected regions. In western Turkey, massive fires have erupted near the Izmir (Smirne) area, further intensifying concerns for local communities and travelers alike.
Satellite imagery from Meteosat-12 shows an extensive spread of fire hotspots during the last 12 hours, highlighting the ongoing severity of the situation. The scale and intensity of these fires have prompted urgent questions about the safety of travel to Crete and other impacted areas.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely, issuing travel advice and updates to ensure public safety. Tourists planning visits are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and follow all guidance related to wildfire risks.
