Time is running and the first half of Winter 2021/2022 is over.
In 2 articles, we are looking at ESRL composites for Europe /https://mkweather.com/esrl-composites-for-europe-the-1st-half-of-winter-2021-2022-and-the-first-2-weeks-of-january-2022// and North America for 2 periods: A) the first half of Winter 2021/2022 (1.12.2021-14.1.2022) and B) The first 2 January 2022 weeks (1.1.-14.1.2022).
Extremely warm December 2021 in the USA /https://mkweather.com/december-in-the-usa-was-exceptionally-warm-5f-above-average// caused, that an anomaly for the first half of Winter 2021/2022 for the USA is strongly positive, except for a few northernmost and westernmost states.
Simultaneously, very cold anomaly above the western half of Canada and warm anomaly above Mexico were outputted.
While the East Coast and parts of the Midwest are in winter drier, so far, the Pacific coast is very stormy, similarly sich as western Great Lakes.
It appears, that both temperature anomalies should be associated with a low-pressure pattern above the western half of Canada and NW USA (warm air from Mexico on its front side and cold air on its backside).
In the first 2 weeks of January 2022, warm air was pushed into Mexico and the Caribbean, while a sign of Arctic blast with western-Canadian origin was evident in Midwest, Great Lakes region, and Ontario, with shorter coldwaves with snowing in Texas, Florida, or Southeast.
Kentucky region in January received again high amounts of precipitation, California was drier, but northern Pacific coast still very stormy.
Geopotential (air pressure) in January 2022 was significantly higher in Southwest and higher than average in South and low geopotential above Canada split into 2 parts above Pacific coast and Hudson Bay.
Newfoundland was hit by stronger Azores / Bermuda high (January).
In the next few weeks, colder conditions such as during December 2021 are in the USA predicted, with effect to seasonal temperature, precipitation, and geopotential anomalies. Early-spring conditions in the southern and eastern USA are however still possible at the end of winter.
