
A massive derecho rolled across the Midwest on Monday and heavy storms are expected during next days too /https://mkweather.com/warnings; https://mkweather.com/warnings-2-day/; https://mkweather.com/warnings-3-day//.
According to our warnings, 3. level is valid in IL, MO, TN, KY, OH, WV on Tuesday, in GA, SC, NC, VA, SD, NC, QB and NL on Wednesday and MN, SD, NE, KS, IA on Thursday. Severe storms up to 3. level is waiting Central Canada, too. In Midwest and Northeast, next derechos are possible.
Severe T-storms in the US and Canada are linked with peak of summer 2020 and very high August temperatures. In southern Midwest, temperatures are reaching 100°F these days and on Northeast and northern Midwest up to 95°F.
Major damage has been reported in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the second-most populated city in the state. A wind gust of 100 mph was clocked in Hiawatha, just a few miles north of Cedar Rapids.
A peak wind gust of 112 mph (180 km/h) was recorded in Midway, Iowa, which would qualify as an EF-2 tornado or a Category 3 hurricane.
After racing across Iowa, the storms swept across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, arriving in Chicago by 4 p.m. on Monday.
A 72 mph (116 km/h) wind gust was observed at Chicago’s Midway Airport and a 62 mph gust was reported at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport as the line of storms moved through.
In 2012, a particularly strong derecho traveled 800 miles from the Midwest to the coast of the mid-Atlantic, causing $3 billion in damage and leaving some in the dark for days during the peak of summer heat.
