Extremely hot air masses, almost +50°C in 2 m and up to +32°C in 850 hPa is persisting just above the region of northern Algeria, northern Tunisia, and southern Italy, with exceptionally bad conditions.
Aerosols from desert Sahara and smoke from wildfires from Atlas are moreover important factors for increasing minimum temperatures and temperatures during the night, which means, that initial conditions for warming are every day thanks to hotter mornings better and better for an anomalous increase of daily temperatures.
Extremely hot days in Algeria are persisting already since early August, e.g. on 5. August, +48,9°C was measured in In Salah, on 7. August +48,8°C in Timimoun or on 9. August +48,7°C in Ouargla and Touggourt.
E.g. in Ouargla, during a 5-day period between 6.-10. August 2021, the maximum temperature reached +48/+49°C every day and every August 2021 day had a maximum temperature above +45°C. The average August maximum temperature for the city is however only +42,5°C, therefore August 2021 is around 5°C above the long-term average, so far.
In Tunisia, even hotter temperatures were observed and in the next period, a threshold of +50,0°C should be overcome.
Neighboring parts of Atlas – mainly in eastern Algeria, swept extreme wildfires, immediately after a few days with anomalously high temperatures.
Only in the last 24 hours, the next 30 deaths were reported, together 69 dead as a death toll from previous days due to extreme wildfires in Algeria.
“In Algeria. Deadly wildfires burned through forested mountains in the Kabyle region of Algeria destroying villages and killing soldiers and civilians so please make it a trend! We need your help it’s a serious issue” has written one of the inhabitants of the most hit region – Kabyle in eastern Atlas on social media.
Situation is extremely critical and during the next days it should be worsened and death tool and damages should be increased.
Anomalously extensive wildfires bother all Mediterranean, in some parts they are the worst since modern records has begun (2003).
