In a series of 9 Mkweather articles, before articles from the world, we will look at extremely cold morning, 22. December 2021 in parts of Europe and many regional temperature records or very low measured minimum temperatures.
In the last article from the series, we will shift into the Russian capital, Moscow.
In Moscow, the minimum temperature of only -22,2°C was on 22. December 2021 measured.
It´s the coldest temperature in Winter 2021/2022 in the city, so far.
Real-feel temperatures were even lower, up to -31°C.
Very cold weather hit parts of Eastern Europe and the Baltic region, too (link above), but the Christmas peak of cold weather is only coming with anomalously dry air from the West.
Moreover, in New Year 2022, even stronger frosts, below -30°C, maybe rarely close to -40°C are in the wider Moscow region possible /https://mkweather.com/frost-inferno-for-poland-ukraine-romania-its-abnormal-30c-40c//.
Extremely cold GFS outputs are still valid mainly for the eastern half of Europe, including Poland, Ukraine, or the Baltic states, in the next days however should return anomalous outputs for western regions, again.
Not so long ago, similar temperatures below -20°C, in the wider region up to -30°C, were reported from the St. Petersburg region /https://mkweather.com/st-petersburg-210c-record-from-1893-was-broken-in-a-metropolitan-area-of-the-city-temperature-dropped-to-30c//. This coldwave was linked with the extremely cold start of Winter 2021/2022 in Scandinavia and the Baltic region /https://mkweather.com/the-worst-predictions-came-true-sweden-427c-the-lowest-temperature-in-naimakka-in-december-in-all-time-history/; https://mkweather.com/the-strongest-early-frosts-in-the-baltic-region-in-62-years-since-1959-tartu-estonia-276c-zoseni-latvia-264c//.

This destabilization of polar vortex should be associated with extreme blizzards across Europe /https://mkweather.com/gfs-expects-extreme-blizzards-in-europe-regionally-20-70-cm-locally-up-to-1-meter-of-snow-possible// and according to the newest outputs, parts of the eastern half of the continent should until New Year receive 30-70, regionally up to 1 meter of snowfall.

January 2022 /https://mkweather.com/frost-inferno-for-poland-ukraine-romania-its-abnormal-30c-40c// /agrees with our long-term outlook /https://mkweather.com/the-long-term-forecast-for-europe-until-30-january-2022/; https://mkweather.com/the-long-term-snow-forecast-for-europe-until-30-january-2022//.
