Spring 2022 is slowly coming to Balkan, and although, morning frosts are forecast to return, extremely warm temperature records appeared already in parts, where Winter 2021/2022 in the last weeks hit in full power – mainly in Greece.
Moreover, the next interesting records from a wider region are coming, including life-threatening winds in Makarska, Croatia, or EF1 tornado in Mugla, western Turkey.
On 21. February 2022, +22,0°C was after a persisting cold winter measured in Athens, Greece, which is almost at levels of December and January all-time temperature records for the city and 3,3°C below all-time February record from late February days.
Temperatures above +20,0°C in the last days appeared in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, or even Austria (Graz reported +22,1°C – an all-time February record, too /European summary here: https://mkweather.com/tropical-30c-in-winter-spain-reported-289c-in-xativa-an-official-record-and-296c-in-sumacarcer-an-unofficial-record//.
Not so far, we reported the worst winter conditions from the region in decades /https://mkweather.com/the-worst-blizzard-in-greece-since-1968-athens-50-cm-istanbul-turkey-36-cm-of-snow-florina-173c-and-a-rare-tornado-near-a-snow-covered-island/; https://mkweather.com/frozen-sea-near-sagiada-greece-after-181c-temperatures-in-lower-elevated-valleys/; https://mkweather.com/mykonos-tinos-naxos-cyclades-in-greece-report-rare-snowfall-minimum-temperature-04c-maximum-temperature-32c-in-mykonos/; https://mkweather.com/a-historic-siberian-winter-in-balkan-montenegro-with-an-all-time-national-record-kosanica-334c/; https://mkweather.com/a-peak-of-winter-2021-2022-in-balkan-karajukica-bunari-serbia-311c/; https://mkweather.com/thermal-waterfall-in-toplita-romania-frozen-for-the-first-time-in-recent-years/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=thermal-waterfall-in-toplita-romania-frozen-for-the-first-time-in-recent-years/.
Currently, despite arriving warm spells, temporary cold air masses should make in southern parts of Europe still big problems, e.g. during a current bora event in Croatia.
The 3rd level of warnings and 140 km/h wind gusts in Makarska were on 22. February 2022 valid / measured.
Collision of cold air with warm air masses above western Turkey even caused an EF1 tornado even in Mugla region /more here: https://eswd.eu//.
Above northern Africa, extremely hot air masses are currently creating, which should mean extreme early-season heatwaves in parts of the Mediterranean, or south-continental Europe until early April 2022 /https://mkweather.com/in-northern-africa-are-creating-extremely-hot-air-masses-in-march-2022-they-should-hit-europe-senegal-424c-mali-415c-algeria-347c/; https://mkweather.com/nao-leading-pattern-minimally-until-1-april-2022/; https://mkweather.com/hot-and-dry-march-cold-and-stormy-april-and-may-long-term-forecast-for-europe-sees-a-return-of-cold-and-weather-patterns//.
